I had high hopes of this (expensive) paperback, since there are very few (if any) contemporary books dedicated to negotiation from the buyers' perspective. Alas, this book disappointed me on many (all) fronts.1. This book provides an OK review of negotiation, but very bland and far from comprehensive or cohesive. It is a messy hodge-podge of topics and issues. While the Red Sheet methodology and its 4 sections (S.T.E.P.) provide some unifying framework, the book would certainly benefit from a critical editor and his/her Red Ink methodology!However, there are very few practical and specific issues that directly relate to purchasing and procurement functions. Therefore the title is misleading. Seasoned professionals such as myself will find nothing of interest here, while young purchasing professionals will be overwhelmed by 350 or so pages and a myriad of steps and "models".2. There are 6 framed practical examples in boxes (presumable important). Of those only half are purchasing examples (pages 206, 298 and 304), the other three have nothing to do with purchasing (pages 159, 162, 165)3. Important topics of interest to most purchasing professionals, such as negotiating simultaneously with multiple suppliers or local agents, sole-source and single-source negotiations are not covered at all (at least I could not find them in the book).4. The style is dry and uninspiring. It reads like a textbook, academic style is used, such as 'Karrass (1996) states "in life you don get what you deserve, ..."')as if Karrass' book is a seminal work! I had to force myself to keep reading.5. The structure of the book (and by that I mean the order of the chapters) is weird and methodologically unsound. Things just don't follow a they should and there is no flow between chapters. For instance, "Defining outcomes", in other words deciding what you want and setting your negotiating goals (one of the first things you need to do in every negotiation) is the title of Chapter 9. The preceding is chapter 8, titled "Game theory in negotiation". "Negotiating across cultures" is chapter 5, followed by the chapter called "Power".6. There is a plethora of doubtful "models", all given strange acronyms, some that mean nothing (RACI, RAQSCI), others that are easy to remember (SOAP, ACE, STEP, COW) but there is so many of them that it starts getting blurred after a while.In conclusion, I wasted $50 or so, should be able to claim it on tax as a legitimate business expense, although it is anything but.

While each of the books has a different focus, they have more in common than just an intended audience. The most striking similarity is a clear desire to improve the knowledge and capabilities of purchasing professionals by capturing O’Brien’s considerable experience and communicating it in a straightforward manner.While some of O’Brien’s recommendations will be familiar to anyone who has read other titles on negotiation, he manages to include surprising bits of good humor throughout, including advice on preparing to buy a nuclear submarine, and how to handle it when you are trying to get a tribal mask onto an airline (after having happily overpaid for it).There is a wise emphasis on preparation, self-awareness, and the reality of a situation versus collaborative altruism. In other words, sometimes a win-win negotiation is not required – just slice the proverbial ‘pie’ and move on. Even in win-win negotiations, sometimes a win is not so great as a WIN.In the preface, the author states: “This is a practical book for anyone who buys and wants to negotiate more effectively with suppliers.” (xiv) The idea of striving for an ‘effective’ negotiation is a good reminder that as nerve racking as they can be, they are necessary for the management of supply.For all the opportunities anyone can have to improve their negotiation skills, the best may be experiencing what an effective negotiation looks and feels like. This point speaks to O’Brien’s differentiation between negotiation skills and negotiation knowledge. Personality has an undeniable role in negotiation, as it determines how we are likely to approach a situation. The same is not true of identity, which can be assumed easier than personality can be changed. An identity is more closely linked to our behavior. As we may find ourselves called to play a deliberate role in a negotiation, we can assume a ‘negotionality’, or way of acting specific to a negotiation. (103)I particularly appreciated the sales perspective O’Brien included in the book, as the focus of chapter 2 and then running as a current throughout. The chapter on body language, complete with pictures, provides wonderful illustrations as to how purchasing professionals can read and use unspoken cues in a negotiation.The other considerable asset of the book are the Red Sheet ® negotiation templates (available in the book and for download from Positive Purchasing). Ted Haigh, a.k.a. "Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails" is a cocktail recipe book, but--as far as recipe books go--is quite readable and is both easy to digest in part or to read cover-to-cover, depending on your mood. Ted Haigh provides detailed (and interesting) back stories on most of the drinks featured in the book, as well as sidebar sections on many of the lesser-known spirits that the recipes call for. In addition to the main parts of the book, Haigh includes an introduction that covers the resurgence of classic cocktails, a glossary, a bibliography, and a resource guide to help you find many of the rarer ingredients he mentions throughout the text. Haigh clearly put a lot of thought and effort into compiling such a comprehensive guide, and it shows: The book is nicely put together and is wonderfully cohesive, with many of the recipes including references to other, similar or related recipes that can be found elsewhere within the book.I do have a few complaints about the book: First of all, it's spiral-bound, which makes it nice as a recipe book and not so nice as something to sit down and read through. Second, the recipes are often not updated to modern tastes and are geared towards the sweet palates of those who originally created the drinks. For example, try the first cocktail listed, the Almagoozlum, which is virtually undrinkable given its syrupy combination of 1.5 ounces of both Chartreuse and simple syrup, with no citrus to balance. Make sure to carefully review the recipes before pouring and shaking, in order to avoid pouring expensive ingredients down the drain. Finally, the resources section at the end of the book, while a great addition, generally favors a few extremely overpriced Internet retailers. Google around and you'll easily find better options.All in all, despite these few issues, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the hows, whys, and whens of classic cocktails. I suspect that many of these recipes were forgotten for a good reason (certainly the Almagoozlum!), but just as many deserve to be revisited so that they can once again grace drinkers' glasses. And even if you find the recipes to be entirely without merit, the background stories will still make this book a worthwhile purchase.

This book has been a lot of fun for us.We recently got into making cocktails after renovating the family room, which has a built-in bar from the 60s. After a year of stocking it and making a lot of standard, popular drinks and trying recipes we found online, we started exploring with bitters and aperitifs and some of the less common spirits.That's why this book was a lot of fun for us. There are classic, original recipes for some of the more common drinks we'd already been making, and it was fun comparing them. And there are a lot of unusual drinks we've never heard of. Plus all of the interesting historical backgrounds.What we did was go through page by page, find something interesting that we have ingredients for, read about it and make it and taste. Then on to the next page! It'll take some time to go through it all (I hope) but it's entertaining.As for the ingredients, many cocktails can be made with basic bar liquors (make sure you have some bitters and both dry & sweet vermouth, at least). I'd say that if your bar is stocked with the basics, all you'll want to do is flip through for a few of the unusual things you don't already have so you can try something new. And then have some fun!

This my second copy of this book (my first one got lost while moving). I love the stories and background information that is written with each recipe. This book is functional and educational. I will say it is a VERY expensive hobby to get in to though! There are a lot of rare ingredients that need to be special ordered for certain drinks. I have had so much fun inviting people over to try out these drinks though! We go through the book and make different recipes and divide up one serving between all of us and move on to the next drink. It’s a great way to find favorites and not get too sloshed ; ).

Designed from the get go by a graphic artist with full artistic control and an obsessive and loving attention to detail this book delights at least four of the five senses - okay, all five if you like the smell of good ink) done with exhaustive attention to subject material, layout, paper, printing and virtually every other aspect one could think of.This is a must have classic tome on mixology and of course on classic mixology.While there are many new reprints of classic bar and mixing manual today this one is especially useful from a practical and entertainment standpoint. The wire binding, relatively spill proof paper , backstories and type size/font make it extremely easy to read and use- unlike many of its competitors.Covering 100 extremely hard to find but very worthwhile recipes and the back stories to regale your audience while preparing said recipes.

I received this as a birthday present and I am enjoying reading it immensely. The book is well-written. It is very informative with good narrative from both sides of the conflict. It does a fine job of giving insight to what occurred in Stalingrad at the time of the Nazi occupation. Overall, a worthwhile read that I highly recommend without reservations. It has black and white photos.

To complicated of a event for a book

Enemy at the gates is a good book to read if you are a World War II scholar wishing to learn the full, in-depth extent of the battle of Stalingrad. To many others it will prove a challenging book to read. At times it is confusing and even the best reader's can only hope to drag themselves along the ragged plotline without any notes. Tieing in to the movie is not right - only about three pages of the book are even slightly similar to the movie. I was also disgusted to find that less than a half of the book was devoted to what I feel was the battle of Stalingrad, while the rest petered into the rather mundane account of the battle on the steppe both before and after the fact. I would only recommend this book to the worst of my enemies hoping that the drool from their bored eyeballs will damage the book and force them to pay for damages. A great book on the Battle of Stalingrad. Finally, I am really glad to see this gem available in the kindle format. I am a history buff who has been reading books since I was a teenager. I specifically have an interest in Military History throughout ages.Stalingrad was definitely the turning point in World War II. The Eastern Front was the war theatre where the outcome of World War II was decided. No doubt about this. As part of this mammoth struggle, arises Stalingrad as the bloodiest and biggest battle of world war II. It lasted for about 6 months and its tragic outcome was close to the 2 million casualties on both sides (about 750 thousand soviets and 840 thousand axis where circa 400 thousand were Germans).Probably the title of this book sounds familiar to you and this is because the Holywood movie directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud with good actors like Judd Law, Ralph Fiennes and Ed Harris. Let me tell you, the whole movie is based in less than 10 pages of William Craig's book! you can imagine that Craig’s Enemy at The gates is much more than that.This great American novelist and historian (Craig was a graduate from Columbia University) spent 5 years of his life traveling three continents interviewing survivors of this horrendous battle (Italians, Germans, Russian, Israelis) given that in the German offensive many soldiers of different nationalities were serving with the German Wermarcht and its allies (Germans, Austrians, Croats, Romanians, Italians, and Hungarians). William Craig put a human face to the battle, something that other historians grossly ignore. Moreover at the end of the book, Craig talk about those former soldiers whose stories appear in the book and what they were doing at the time Enemy at the Gates was completed (1973). World War 2 was still fresh in the minds of those who were interviewed as actors in that drama.Let me add at the end that I have been reading about Stalingrad for decades, I had read the best that has been published on the topic and I can assure you that William Craig’s Enemy at The gates is among the Best! I have 2 copies of this book bought used in e-Bay (hardcover) and one paperback bought in England (Penguin books). Now I have the kindle edition and I am again reading it. Anthony Beevor’s Stalingrad is a great book. It would be a very hard decision to decide which book describes better the battle with all its drama and ferocity. I would give my vote for Enemy at the Gates (by a narrow margin indeed).

This is the first book I've read on the battle for Stalingrad proper. It's great reading, and I could hardly put it down. As they say, Craig knew how to spin a good yarn. True, he had excellent material to write a great story, but it's one of his merits that he collected much of this material himself, through interviews with many participants of the battle.That said, some flaws of the book bothered me even while I was enjoying the narrative:1) Craig often adds the "von" particle to the name of the German commander Friedrich Paulus. This mistake is more serious than it seems, as it may give the reader the impression that Paulus was of noble origin and, therefore, in all likelihood, the heir to a long family tradition of military service. This is not the case: Paulus was of relatively humble origins, and this may arguably be an important element to understand the man and his behavior both during the battle and in the years that followed.2) I was surprised to read about the "Kazakh" villagers at the Don that had expelled their Russian liberators and were all murdered in retaliation. One reviewer clarified that it was actually a Cossack village, which makes more sense. Again, an apparently minor mistake may lead to very wrong conclusions which affect our whole view of the war in Russia. Cossacks were opposed to the Bolshevik regime from the start, and suffered a lot under Soviet rule.3) To some extent, Craig fails to convey to the reader the moral dimension of the battle. Sometimes, it seems we are reading the account of a duel between two opponents with an equally valid claim to the stakes. Craig does tell some harrowing stories, most notably that of a baby torn apart by two German soldiers just for the fun of it. He also tells episodes of cruelty by the Red Army (and the NKVD). However, one of the main aspects of this war that made it different from all other wars was the SYSTEMATIC perpetration of atrocities - in an unprecedented scale - in the wake of Wehrmacht victories everywhere. By failing to present this context (or, perhaps, by assuming readers have it in mind), Craig makes it difficult for us to understand the harsh treatment Russians dispensed on German prisoners after victory, and makes it look like sheer, gratuitous cruelty. Without condoning the Russian attitude, Craig could have told us more about the reasons that led to it. Among these, the horrendous treatment of Soviet POWs, over one million of which died under captivity in the winter of 1941-42. Not surprisingly, a common motto in Russia at the time was "Comrade, kill your German."4) As a consequence of the above - and this, paradoxically, is also a tribute to Craig's narrative skills - the reader could easily catch himself rooting for the Germans, especially in the second part of the book, which focuses on the plight of the Sixth Army under encirclement. One reader mentioned that Germans in the book are usually much more lifelike than Russians. I had the same impression. I think I'm much more familiar with Paulus and other German commanders and soldiers than with many Russians that are mentioned but that we never really get to know in depth. In fairness, let us admit it must have been much easier for Craig, in the late 1960's and early 1970's, to interview German veterans in West Germany than Soviet ones in Brezhnev's USSR (some of these accounts were obtained in Israel and elsewhere). And he certainly had much easier access to German documents and letters than to Russian ones.Why, then, four stars? Because, as I said above, the book is a great read. Also, Craig's account of the battle seems to be fairly accurate, within the limitations of the time when it was written, and in spite of the slant toward the German side. (This must not be confused with sympathy for the Nazis. Craig has none.) I thought I learned a lot in the chapters describing Stalin and Hitler making decisions on the conduct of the battle. One can easily understand why so many German officers and soldiers became disillusioned with the Führer after Stalingrad. No wonder so many high ranking veterans of the Russian campaign eventually got involved in the "officer's plot" to murder Hitler on July 20, 1944. A little episode Craig tells makes a lot of sense to the reader at this point. In the last weeks of the battle, a group of German soldiers were listening to a radio broadcast from Germany. They were weeping at the sound of the national anthem, "Deutschland über alles" (music by Haydn, remember). But then, when the "Horst Wessel Lied" (song of the Nazi Party) followed, someone smashed the radio to pieces. No one protested.As the example shows, Craig has an eye for the telling detail, and many of the episodes in the book really move you, make you think and give you a most revelatory picture of the mind of men (and women) in extreme circumstances. The description of cannibalism among Italian prisoners of war, the sense of duty of the German doctor (who would pay dearly for his decision to return to his men in the battlefield even though he had a chance to stay away), the feelings of comradeship, the Russian nurse who lost all her limbs: these are some of the episodes I think I will not forget. As I will never forget the story of Mikhail Goldstein's violin playing on New Year's eve. I won't spoil your pleasure here, but this very moving episode alone was, for me, worth the price of the book many times over!
